Constellation Brands reported better-than-expected quarterly earnings Thursday, driven by strength in its beer business that more than offset continued weakness in wines and spirits. Management's upbeat forecast for fiscal year 2025 should send the stock to new all-time highs. Constellation Brands Why we own it : We like Constellation Brands for its beer franchise, which includes popular Mexican brands Modelo, Corona and Pacifico. More importantly, the sales gains in the beer business are almost entirely driven by volume gains, not higher prices. Management cited Circana channel data as evidence that its beer business outperformed the total U.S. beer category and remained the top dollar sales share gainer.

Constellation Brands stock is looking like it could be ready to break out, with its strong beer business well-positioned for market share gains in the upcoming fiscal year. Morgan Stanley anticipates Constellation to continue gaining market share at the expense of Bud Light during this period. Since Constellation tends to boast industry-leading results in its beer business, we're confident it will deliver strong numbers again next week. Over the past few years, Constellation has been trying to boost sales in its wine and spirits business — shifting from lower-priced brands to more premium names. While wine and spirits make up a small part of Constellation's overall business, Jim has said it must go.

Goldman Sachs believes Constellation Brands (STZ) has the potential to revive sales in its struggling Wine & Spirits division. It's not impossible, but we're more bullish on the company's core beer business. In the Goldman note, Herzog acknowledged that Wine & Spirits has, indeed, struggled. Management's emphasis on "driving shareholder returns reduces the risk of its underperforming Wine business," she added. We had been hoping to hear news about a breakup of its underperforming Wine & Spirits, which did not happen.

New York CNN —Bud Light continues to drag Anheuser-Busch InBev’s bottom line in the United States, but the world’s biggest brewer’s sales rose because of higher prices. The company reported a 13.5% decline in third-quarter US revenue per 100 liters, a key measure of beer sales, as an ongoing backlash to Bud Light continues. The brand’s customers turned their backs on Bud Light after the company partnered with a transgender influencer – and then muddled its response. Tuesday’s report painted a bleak picture for Bud Light, sales and shipments of which have weakened dramatically since its brief and limited partnership with trans influencer Dylan Mulvaney in the spring. Sales of Bud Light are still sinking, with volumes down 30% year-over-year for the four weeks ending on October 7, according to NIQ data given to Beer Business Daily newsletter.

New York CNN —Bud Light might be experiencing a knockout of its own, but this time it’s on purpose. The multiyear sponsorship, which begins on January 1, 2024, makes Bud Light the “official beer partner” of the UFC, with the beer branding having a “highly visible presence” during fights and weigh-ins. The new agreement is a reunion for Bud Light and the UFC, after a previous sponsorship ended in 2017. Bud Light replaces Modelo as UFC’s beer sponsor, the Mexican lager that has dethroned Bud Light from its title of America’s top-selling beer. With the stock market deeply oversold this week, we put cash to work by picking stocks across a range of sectors including energy, technology and materials. With the market oversold, per the S & P 500 Short Range Oscillator , our investment discipline called for us to search for any dislocations within the portfolio. Tech stocks remained under pressure Tuesday afternoon, giving us an opportunity to buy 7 shares of Broadcom and lower our cost basis. But stocks returned to the red Thursday, and the market remained firmly in oversold territory. However, the market reversed course in midday trading, with all three major U.S. stock benchmarks trading sharply higher.

Constellation Brands on Thursday reported earnings and revenue that topped analysts' expectations for its fiscal second quarter of 2024. The Mexican beer powerhouse, owner of the Modelo Especial and Corona Extra brands, reported double-digit sales growth in its beer business as the division continues to dominate the overall beer and high-end categories. The Modelo brand family was a particular bright spot: Modelo Especial grew nearly 9%, while Modelo Chelada brands posted growth of more than 40%. The company's wine and spirits brands, however, underperformed year over year. In its previous quarter, beer sales rose 11% year over year driven by stable consumer demand and higher pricing.

Constellation also raised the annual sales forecast for its beer business. Modelo is now beating Bud Light for the entire year

New York CNN —Modelo Especial is now officially America’s best-selling beer, dethroning Bud Light from the top spot it has largely held for the past two decades. Year-to-date sales data through August 12 shows it was tight, but Modelo eked out the top spot with an 8.34 share vs. 8.28 for Bud Light. Summer has been a bright spot for the Mexican lager, with Modelo surpassing Bud Light in May, June and July monthly sales. Modelo has held a 9.1 share for the past four weeks as Bud Light slipped to a 7 share of off-premise beer sales. There’s been some “material improvement,” for the Anheuser-Busch (BUD) brand Bud Light, according to Beer Business Daily, a trade publication.

That’s a drastic change from the same quarter a year ago, when Bud Light sales were higher than Coors Light and Miller Light sales combined. Net income for the second quarter grew to $342 million, up from $47 million in the same period a year earlier. Since then, sales of Bud Light have been consistently falling by more than 20% every week (compared to the same week prior) since April. In May, the seemingly unthinkable happened: Modelo Especial displaced Bud Light from its top-selling spot in the United States for the first time, ending a roughly two-decade run for Bud Light. The beer giant is set to announce earnings — which will fully cover the Bud Light sales slide — on Thursday.

Activist Commentary: Elliott is a very successful and astute activist investor, particularly in the technology sector. Constellation Brands produces and markets beer, wine and spirits, but it's essentially a beer company with 85% of its revenue coming from beer sales. Moreover, it is not just a niche beer business anymore. First, the company has traded at a discount because of the dual-class share structure that allowed the Sands family to control Constellation. This leaves a core beer business that can now be operated without unnecessary distractions.
